Originals by Molly Trull

I'm a 21 year old singer/songwriter / English major from Columbia, Missouri. I've had bands backing me before, but I'm taking a break from having a band and mostly performing solo, though eventually I would like to find people to play with again. My influences range from Neko Case, Wanda Jackson, Jenny Lewis, Wilco, Ryan Adams, to X. My sets tend to blend Americana with Rockabilly, hints of Blues, Folk, and Indie Rock. I grew up on alt-country (my first concert was a free Wilco show outdoors in CoMo when I was 5 and my parents often left me with babysitters to go see and tape shows at The Blue Note and Mojo's), and my music tends to reflect that. I began singing and writing songs at age 16, and now I can't stop.

In the past few years, I've had the privilege of opening for artists such as Pieta Brown, Shannon McNally, Macon Greyson, Backyard Tire Fire, Jim Lauderdale, Candy Coburn, and The Clumsy Lovers. We've played in venues around Columbia such as Mojo's, The Blue Note, The Bridge, The Blue Fugue, and The Missouri Theater. I also got the opportunity to perform at the legendary outdoor venue, Luckenbach, TX. In my spare time I am a college Junior at Stephens College, majoring in Creative Writing and minoring in Music and Voice. In the summers, when I have more time for music, I am also a summer camp counselor who hangs out with 6 and 7 year olds and sings Taylor Swift songs.

I was the first female front-woman in my high school's Battle of the Bands at The Blue Note in 2008, and as a prize for winning 1st place I recorded a 7 song demo in Red Boots Studio with Barry Hibdon in Summer 2008 with my high school band. Since recording that, I've written and performed a lot of new material.

This winter break I finally recorded a full album backed by session musicians in Austin, TX. I wrote all 11 songs and produced the album along with Ron Flynt and Walt Wilkins. We are still working on adding extra instruments like violin and lap steel to the tracks, and then they will need to be mixed and mastered, but I am excited (ecstatic even) to say I can probably release it SOON. For now there are some roughly mixed, unfinished versions of a few tracks from the album in the MUSIC section of my site. I am really excited to have something to sell at shows and let people listen to and pass on. I hope people will like the direction we've taken with these songs. A few of them are rerecorded and re-imagined from my 7 song demo, written from the time I was 16 and in high school, and a few of them are brand new. They are mostly featuring a full band sound, but there are a few acoustic songs on the album too. Walt says I write country songs so we were aiming for a country album, but somehow they have a more rocking feel to them and we just (rocked and) rolled with it.

Keep checking this website for updates, and thanks for listening to my music!

I'm proud to say I was a winner in the Youth Category for the 2009 Mountain Stage Newsong Contest for songwriters.
